I was born and educated in Auckland, and completed degrees at Auckland and Otago Universities. i trained as a teacher in 1969. Since then I have had a variety of experience as teacher, broadcaster, adjudicator, performer, accompanist, composer, arranger and conductor. I have been commissioned to write or arrange music for choir or solo voice.
I have written articles for publications of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers, of which I am an associate. I have written programme notes and pre-concert talks for the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. I have taught at a number of schools and served as Music Director for city and suburban Churches.
I like my students to be able to enjoy as wide a range of musical experiences as possible. I teach in classical and jazz styles. I also prepare students for Rockschool exams. I usually include in lessons a full range of skills (including playing pieces, scales and arpeggios, sight reading, theory, and listening. When possible, I offer students the opportunity to develop such skills as playing by ear, improvising, playing from chord symbols, and composing. Many parents like their students to sit examinations, and I am happy to discuss with them which examinations may be suitable. However some students are interested only in playing for their own enjoyment. I try to make this a very satisfying experience for them, although I encourage students to give pleasure to others by playing to them when appropriate, if they feel able to do so.
