Bio

Priya has been learning music since she was five years of age. She has been teaching music for five years; previously with Encore School of Music (Wellington) and Activate Music Academy (Dunedin). She is also a professional artist and is currently completing her Masters in Fine Arts at the Dunedin School of Art. She is concurrently completing her MusB part time at the University of Otago, which she began as a Performance Classical Voice student at Te Koki NZ School of Music in 2014.

She has performed as a chorus member for Opera Otago, Wellington G. and S. and is a former Orpheus Choir Wellington Scholar. She has also participated in live performance artworks which included musical and sound elements. She is currently focusing her time as a musician on Priyavanti Music Tuition and offering her students an insight into different perspectives on approaches to learning music.

Teaching Info

Priya encourages her students to learn at their own pace, and tailors her lessons to suit each individual student. She offers a range of styles and while classically trained herself, encourages her students to learn music that both suits their own style of learning as well as of their own choosing and interest.

As a vocal tutor, she focuses on posture and pedagogical techniques acquired from years of training herself as a performer, as well as from her years of experience as a music teacher.

With her Fine Arts background, Priya is able to creatively approach tutoring. As a teacher, her philosophy is to develop and nurture her students by encouraging, supporting and inspiring them. She instills a strong foundation of music theory and understanding of rhythm and technique to support her students in their budding sense of themselves as artists and creative performers, as well as musicians.
