Qualifications: MMA in Music Composition, NZMusic school, Victoria University, Wellington. BA in Music Education from Auckland University and a Diploma of Teaching, Trinity Grade 8 piano, Grade 5 theory, Certificate in Orchestration from Berklee Music School.
Pricing: Lessons are for 30 minutes - $35 per half hour. Special young-beginner sessions available - $25 for 20 minutes.
Styles: Work towards a music exam or just play for personal interest. Play Classical, contemporary, Pop, Folk, Rock, Blues, learn theory. Play the music you are interested in.
Suitability: I provide lessons to students from ages 5 and up, and also welcome adult students. As an experienced teacher I have ideas and resource materials to suit many different learners. I enjoy working with students of all ages and abilities.

Bio

Before moving to Wellington I ran The Hillsborough Music School in Auckland for 18 years, http://hps.school.nz/school-info/music-lessons teaching individuals, paired and group lessons, developing programmes for primary students at all levels, organised concert shows, entered school music competitions, prepared students for Trinity piano exams and NCEA music.

For part of this time I worked in the Education Department at the NZ Music Commission. https://nzmusic.org.nz/education/ working with young song-writers.

I have also played in numerous bands and solo in New Zealand, the USA and UK.

Teaching Info

Students can expect to gain a well rounded knowledge of both practical skills and theory. I use a variety of teaching method books that scaffold learners through new concepts and skills, as well as other activities and games available in the teaching studio. Musicianship, interpretation, improvisation and aural skills will also be developed. Work in Classical, Contemporary, Pop, Folk, Blues styles, learn theory. Play the music you are interested in.

Sonya was a fabulous music teacher/mentor for our son Ben for approx 12yrs giving him the confidence, encouragement, ability & flair to continue his passion of music into his adult life. Totally recommend & admire this talented lady. Deb Thomas.
