Bio
My name is J.Y Lee and I am a saxophonist/flautist based in Auckland.
I’ve been playing music throughout my whole life, first started playing flute when I was 8, saxophone when I was 15, then went onto study at the University of Auckland jazz school.
I have over a decade of experience in the music industry and I’ve recorded, performed, and am currently involved with some of Aotearoa’s leading artists and bands such as Yoko-Zuna, Avantdale Bowling Club, Sir Dave Dobbyn, CHAII, The Circling Sun, and The Saxobros.
Other artist I’ve also collaborated with include Home Brew, David Dallas, Ladi 6, P-MONEY, P Digsss (Shapeshifter), Team Dynamite, SWIDT, MELODOWNZ, Noah Slee, Christoph El Truento, Mara TK, Troy Kingi, Niko Walters, Muroki, Bailey Wiley, just to name a few.
I’m also the founder and co-ordinator of the improvised music and jazz initiative/event ‘151 IMPROV’ which I have been running for the last 8 years.
Teaching Info
My lessons are customized to meet the needs of each individual student. I allow students to determine what they want to achieve with the saxophone and help them reach their goals. Simultaneously, I focus on building strong fundamental skills, particularly for beginners. For more advanced students, I offer guidance in exploring harmony, improvisation, and cultivating creativity, as well as developing a distinct sound and style
I usually travel to students for lessons otherwise I have a rehearsal space that can be made available if required.
