Bio

Kia ora,

Thank you for taking the time to check out my profile!

I’m based in Wellington which I’ve been calling home for nearly 7 years. Before that I traveled quite a bit in Europe, Asia and Africa. I’m originally from Colorado, USA.

I’ve been teaching for 15 years. The last 2.5 years I’ve been working with a music studio in Karori teaching guitar and piano to kids, teens and adults!

In addition to teaching, I play guitar in a band called the “Kingston High All Stars”! I founded this band in 2022 with my friends out of our shared love for the music of West Africa. Before this project I’ve had the chance to play in many other bands and groups around Wellington; a Balkan jazz band, a psychedelic-indie group, a Red Hot Chili Peppers cover band and Batucada to name a few.

Some of my favorite genres of music at the moment are Sahara blues, Bossa Nova, funk, blues, Americana, jazz, New Wave, classic rock and classical music.

Teaching Info

When I teach music I want my students to have fun, enjoy the process, feel comfortable making mistakes and to gain confidence in their instrument!

In our first lesson I like to spend a few moments getting to know you; favorite bands or artists, any musical goals you might have, how much time you can dedicate to practice each week, favorite food, experience with music and so on.

Each lesson is tailored to you entirely with your goals in mind! Whether it’s gaining a better understanding of the fretboard, developing rock steady rhythm, figuring out where to take a song you wrote, shredding or learning your favorite songs to play for your family and friends!

My teaching areas fall into 5 main categories:

  1. Rhythm
  2. Technique / Technical ability
  3. Theory and Knowledge
  4. Aural training (ear training)
  5. Songs and Jamming

I think these 5 categories are fantastic for becoming a well rounded musician. Learning to play music like most things is a bit of a puzzle; slowly taking piece by piece all the elements and putting them together to a cohesive whole.
