Piano Lessons | Aural Lessons, Theory Lessons
Bio
I began piano lessons at the age of 7 and started teaching music privately when I was 16. I have also had lessons on the flute, violin/folk fiddle, oboe and bassoon. At university, as part of my BA, I took some Stage 1 and 2 music papers.
I have had a wide range of musical experiences – singing in a choir in France, organising a music festival, playing in various orchestras, participating in house concerts, sitting beginner level jazz piano exams, and playing in studio recordings.
Since 2000 I have been an associate of the Institute of Registered Music Teachers (NZ). Many of my students have successfully passed Royal Schools, St, Cecilia and NZMEB exams.
Teaching Info
Lessons can be for fun or for students wanting to sit Royal Schools (ABRSM) exams. Most lessons include pieces, theory, and technical exercises using a range of materials from my music library. We also learn duets, and do aural and sightreading. I love it when a student approaches me with some extra music they would like to learn, or have already learnt.
For those wanting to focus more on theoretical knowledge or sit an exam I am able to give theory lessons. I enjoy teaching adults and have time during school hours available.
Julie has been my piano teacher for a number of years. As an adult learner, I have appreciated her patience and sense of humour. Lessons focus around what I have managed to get done, rather than following a rigidly fixed programme. This flexibility, being able to adapt to the situation, is very much one of her strengths. As is her ability to give everyday examples which may give a piece or some aspect of theory, a more understandable context. I enjoy our lessons, and it is her encouragement that keeps me on track.
