Bio
Born and raised in Christchurch, Shelley Spang began her musical career at the age of four with piano lessons with the late Verna Anderson. In 1988, Shelley graduated from Canterbury University with a Bachelor of Music degree, majoring in vocal performance under the tutelage of Mary Adams-Taylor. Shelley also holds LTCL Diplomas in both singing and piano studies.
At the age of 15, Shelley became a member of the 1988 National Youth Choir under Prof. Peter Godfrey where they won at the International Choral Festival in Vienna, and performed at the Welsh Eisteddfod.
Following University, Shelley spent five years in London studying privately with Rudolf Piernay and Margaret Lobo. In 1991, she was selected as one of nine students from throughout the UK to complete a Postgraduate Diploma of Music Therapy at Roehampton Institute in Surrey.
Since returning to New Zealand in 1992, Shelley established a career in music therapy work with a diverse range of clients covering a wide range of disabilities, including prematurity, psychiatric illness, profound multiple handicaps and dementia.
Shelley was a foundation member of Tower Voices New Zealand, and travelled with this choir to Spain in 1998 for an International Choir Festival, and in 1999 the choir performed in Noumea as representatives of New Zealand.
Shelley is a member of the NZ Registered Teachers Association and is a registered Music Therapist. She combines her therapy work with a private studio, teaching both singing and piano to students of all ages. In addition, she teaches piano and vocal students at Christ’s College in Christchurch. Shelley was also, until recently, the South Island Accompanist for the NZ Male Voice Choir, and regularly adjudicates competitions throughout the South Island.

All levels of tuition available, from beginners to students wanting to extend skills and repertoire. For those wanting to sit Classical exams, both the Trinity College and Royal Schools of London syllabuses are available. For students simply wanting to re-visit old skills, extend their leisure time , work towards auditions, music theatre options, NCEA requirements or choral expertise, these options are all available. Techniques of singing and breathing covered in all lessons and various styles of music available.
