Bio
Praised as an “outstanding musician with potential for exceptional success,” flautist Anastasia Bell is rapidly gaining recognition for her extraordinary talent and dedication. In 2023, she was awarded the prestigious Cecily Macoll High Achiever Award as part of the Dame Malvina Major Arts Excellence Awards. This honour funded her participation in the flute intensive programme at Michigan University School of Music, where she studied under the guidance of renowned flautist Amy Porter after securing a scholarship.
Currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance, with a minor in Music Composition as of 2025 at Te Kōkī the New Zealand School of Music, Anastasia’s musical journey began in Christchurch. She consistently demonstrated leadership and artistry as Principal Flute of both the Christchurch Youth Orchestra and the Burnside High School Orchestra (Specialist Music Programme). Under her direction, her ensembles earned multiple accolades, including Platinum awards at the National MEFA competition and Gold awards at the Aurora Festival and Christchurch Wind Festival, where her section was also named ‘Best Flute Section.’ In 2024, Anastasia was awarded a full scholarship to the Pettman National Junior Academy of Music.
In 2023, Anastasia competed in the National Concerto Competition and earned a Highly Commended Award at the National Chamber Music Competition. Dr. Helen Renaud, Conductor and Musical Director, commended Anastasia as a “highly competent chamber musician and strong academic student.” Her trio clinched first place at the 2024 Bach International Music Competition in Poland, adding to her growing list of accolades. She has also toured the South Island with acclaimed artist Rakuto Kurano and participated in masterclasses with world-class flautists, including Joshua Batty.
In 2024, Anastasia was selected for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra’s Conducting Fellowship and has been involved with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra Virtuosi Chamber Ensemble and the Aspirations conducting programme. As a composer, she has earned recognition with awards from SOUNZ and the NZCF Choral Federation and was honoured with the Principal’s Cup for Composition at Burnside High School.
Anastasia Bell’s broad international knowledge of teaching and unwavering commitment to her craft mark her as one of the most promising musicians in New Zealand and an exceptional tutor.
Teaching Info
Because of her modern, integrated teaching style and inclusive demeanour, Anastasia has been described as a teacher who naturally inspires students through the rapid progress her advice has on how her students perform.
From a beginner level, students should expect to be thoroughly taught the basics of breathing, making sound, and music theory, whilst moving through repertoire quickly and in a fun way. A focus will be on technique, articulation, tone, breath control, dynamics, tuning, and strengthening coordination.
Intermediate to Advanced students will have music taken to more advanced concepts including depth of sound, vibrato, reducing tension, and tone colour.
All students will gain a solid foundation in which musical ideas and intentions can be expressed confidently! Anastasia too ensures that all students remain enthusiastic about music, and have sufficient knowledge of performance psychology to achieve set ambitions.
