Bio
Hello, I’m a full time music tutor and performer based in Christchurch.
My main workhorse is actually the drums (you can get in touch for drum lessons if you want, that’s a whole other thing), but regarding the keys… I am a former member of Pickle Darling’s live band, where had the opportunity to tour the country and play pretty keyboard parts as opener/ support for international acts including Lucy Dacus, The Beths, Cate Le Bon, and Fontaines DC.
I have used piano as a tool for songwriting, composing and arranging from string quartet to synth pop to Big Band, and am consistently working on intimate solo piano works, (1 EP and 2 albums deep so far).
I starting to noodle on a little casio keyboard at home from about the age of 16. I was instantly infatuated by the impact of notes working together in harmony and became completely ravenous to achieve a high level of musical fluency. I wanted to be able to bring the music in my head to life and instantly replicate sounds that I heard from others. I went on to pursue a music degree and subsequently/stubbornly, a music career.
In recent years I have become quite obsessed with how to teaching music as well as playing it, so here we are. It’s a great joy of mine to pass on my knowledge and experience.
Teaching Info
Some things we could work on:
Training your ear to hear and transcribe notes and chords.
Making theory less intimidating, theory is a toolkit. Find new sounds, learn what to call them, learn how to recall them.
Workshopping songs/compositions
Expanding your repertoire of voicings and exploring fresh approaches to the instrument
Practical and contextual explanation of more advanced territory if you’re ready for it: chord extensions, voice leading, reharmonization, borrowed chords etc.
Feel free to get in touch for a meeting in the studio to see if lessons with me will be a right fit for you, I am happy to recommend some other options if you desired focus is better suited to another tutor.
