Bio
Hi, my name’s Connor McAneny, I’ve been playing the piano for 21 years and specialise in Jazz, improvisation, and music theory.
I finished my Bachelors of Music majoring in Jazz Performance at the University of Auckland in 2014, and have taught in schools and community centres around Auckland since 2011. In 2018 I moved to Guangzhou, China for 2 years to design and teach a new Jazz major at the Xinghai Conservatory of music.
In early 2023 I finished my Masters of Music in Jazz performance, achieving first class honours. As of 2023 I teach part time at the University of Auckland, teaching the first year Jazz piano students.
Teaching Info
I’m pretty flexible as a teacher and cater each lesson to the students skill level, and musical goals and interests. I don’t particularly like to teach solely from books, though I can and have in the past if that works for the student, but I also often transcribe and write out songs my students would like to learn. I’m not a fan of rote memorisation and tend to use pieces as a means to teach students as much as I can about harmony, chord/scale theory, rhythm, coordination, etc.
