Originally from Timaru, Ella trained in Vocal Performance and Music Education at the University of Canterbury under the tutalage of Dame Malvina Major, and also studied Musical Theatre in Melbourne, Australia at APO Arts Academy.

Ella has been teaching singing since 2013 and has had excellent results helping her students to build self-confidence and healthy singing technique, with several of her students being accepted to study singing and theatre at a tertiary level. Ella also enjoys Music Direction and has been the Musical Director for two South Canterbury Drama League productions ‘Showstoppers’ 2014, and ‘Fame Jr.’ 2013 and also Roncalli College’s production of ‘The Addams Family.’ Ella has recently acted as music director for Aidan Theatre’s Christmas Pantomime ‘Cinderella’ and is currently working on ‘The Addams Family’ for Variety Theatre Ashburton and ‘Showstoppers 2’ for The South Canterbury Drama League. Ella is keen for students to enjoy the many opportunities to be part of theatrical performances around South Canterbury.

Ella has an extensive performance career, having been performing since the age of 6 and involved with Musical Theatre since she was 11. Career Highlights include Jesus Christ Superstar 2012, playing the lead role of Mother Abbess in The Sound of Music 2013, and being a guest artist for Showstoppers in 2014.

Ella loves passing on her own passion for singing and performing to her students and gets great joy out of seeing them develop into confident, well-rounded singers.

Teaching Info

The Ella Thomas Vocal Studio offers singing and music theatre training to all ages. Ella aims to foster a life-long love of music and performing and instill healthy and sustainable singing technique in students to ensure their voices stay strong and fit.

Classical technique is taught along with a range of age and ability appropriate songs. Auxilliary skills such as music theory, aural, and sight singing are also taught at the Junior and Senior levels.

Mini Private Lessons are for 4-9 years

Junior Private/Pair Lessons are for 9-13 years

Senior Private Lessons are for 13-18 years

45 and 60 minute Advanced Private Lessons are available.

Adult Private/Pair Lessons are also available for both beginner and advanced students.
