Bio
Kia ora!
I am a Pōneke based trombone player, composer, band leader and educator. I’ve been playing trombone since 2013, and professionally since 2019. Over the last few years I’ve performed with an extensive number of local jazz, classical and contemporary ensembles, including the Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra, Queenstown Jazz Orchestra, Bill Martin Septet, Michael Gordon Octet, Ralph Miller Nonet, and my own quartet featuring original compositions.
I currently work as a freelance musician playing jazz, EDM, and indie rock, as well as playing first trombone in the Wellington Symphonic Bands. My current composition style incorporates elements of bebop harmony, pop style melodies and the breadth of form common in concert band writing.
Besides trombone, I play keyboard in rock and pop contexts, and use piano as a composition tool, and so offer lessons to beginner pianists, or those interested in writing songs or deepening their understanding of harmony and music theory.
Teaching Info
I like to teach in a way that is tailored to the individual, i.e. understanding where the students want to suceed, and helping them pursue those goals. Lessons can be as free form or as structured as the student likes, as I have a range of teaching materials but also enjoy the flexibility of improvisation and digging deep into student’s questions about their own playing. Lessons can cover trombone technique, improvisation, song writing and composition.
