Bio
I am a professional flautist, playing both flute and piccolo, as a member of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra for the past 20 years, and for Musical Theatre Showbands. I have played for Dunedin City Wind Orchestra and Dunedin Collegiate Orchestra, and enjoy playing in small ensembles and also as a soloist, incorporating many styles/genres of music.
I have recently returned to flute and recorder teaching after a 17-year hiatus. I have been working as a doctor (GP) for the past 26 years but have now decided to concentrate on my musical career. I have two teenage children who are also both musicians.
Previously I have taught for 3 years at Dunedin Saturday Morning Music Classes (SMMC), teaching groups from beginner level and including both school aged children and adult learners, and have taken Music and Movement classes for babies and toddlers.
I have recently completed the Foundation Music Teaching course with the IRMTNZ, am teaching recorder and flute at SMMC, and acting as a reliever woodwind teacher for the Itinerant Music Teacher schools programme.
I teach students from beginner to more advanced level, am prepared to teach basic theory, and my teaching will incorporate styles from classical to popular music. I plan to be able to prepare students for performances and examinations. I am happy to teach flute students from school age (around 9 years) to adults, and recorder from age 5.
My mission is to share my passion for the flute, so you can express yours.
Teaching Info
I develop lesson plans tailored for each individual student.
A lesson will usually start with reviewing goals, then warm-up and scales/exercises, work on repertoire and studies, some theory concepts, and then a game or playing together (duets).
My aims:
- To instil a lifetime of passion for music and a lifetime of learning
- To create a strong technical foundation for flute playing by building on the basics, while also developing musicality.
- To set goals for each individual student and work towards achieving them.
For beginners, students will be taught the basics including breathing, articulation, making a good sound, and music theory. I like to incorporate games in my teaching so that these skills can be incorporated in a fun way.
Intermediate to Advanced students – I will incorporate concepts such as intonation, vibrato, and technical exercises to develop certain skills.
I choose repertoire to suit each individual student and their goals; and also use Method Books in my teaching.
