Bio
I love encouraging people of all ages to enjoy and get involved in music. I’ve learned myself since I was small, and have a wealth of experience playing and teaching in all sorts of musical contexts. I’ve taught in schools, Saturday morning music classes, youth orchestras, and privately.
Along the way, I’ve been a cellist in the Dunedin Symphony, Heisenberg Ensemble (Scotland), and Wellington City Orchestra; a sax player in the Dunedin City Jazz Orchestra; a pianist, accompanist, and music arranger for countless friends’ weddings (among other things!); and I’ve run hundreds of music classes for young kids with my company Windmill Music.
I hold an MA(Mus), PGDipArts, BMus/BA, LTCL, AdvCertABRSM.
Teaching Info
Cello: I take beginner cellists from the age of 6 up to adults of any age! As someone who started as a young child, I well remember the things that helped me love music, and the things that hindered progress, and this personal experience shapes my work with children. And as someone who has also been an adult learner, I know both the challenges and the rewards which come with ’picking it up’ again.
Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 mins, and are correspondingly $40 / $55 / $70.
We can discuss options to hire cellos, and also pathways for playing with others eventually, whether you are a child or an adult.
Piano: Piano lessons provide a fantastic foundation for all musical learning. They are rewarding in themselves, but also for the way in which they help with music theory overall, and provide a solid visual understanding of the way notes relate to one another. There’s a vast array of repertoire out there, and many genres: try some classical, some jazz, or learn to accompany yourself singing pop songs. Great for all kids, adults getting back into music learning, and any singers who want to improve their note learning and sight singing.
Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 mins, and are correspondingly $40 / $55 / $70.
