Pianist Jie Ying started learning the piano at the age of 5 where she studied with her father, who is also an Artist. By the age of 7, she was already involved in many public solo and ensemble performances with the Musikinder Ensemble, and studied under Mr James & Mrs Alice Yap for 9 years.
During her secondary school years, she took O level Music as a subject and has achieved a Distinction. In 2005 and 2007 respectively, she too achieved a Distinction for both her ATCL and LTCL Piano Performance Diploma Examinations from Trinity Guildhall.
In 2011, she graduated with a Distinction in Music Performance (Diploma) from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) Singapore, where she studied under the tutelage of Dr Paul Liang (Graduated from Julliard School of Music) throughout the three years Diploma course. She won third prize in the 2010 NAFA Music Essentials Concerto Competition Piano Category with Saint Saens’ Piano Concerto no. 2 in G minor. In addition, she was awarded the Ngee Ann Kongsi Merit Award twice and was being offered the Yamaha Scholarship in 2010.
Jie Ying has had the opportunities to study under many great pianists all over the world including Ms Rena Phua (Hong Kong), Professor Yu Chun Yee, Toh Chee Hung (Singapore), Dennis Lee (Singapore), Yaron Kohlberg (Israel), Julian Jacobson (UK), Dina Parakhina (UK), Tong-II Han (Korea), Gordon Fergus Thompson (UK), Kathron Sturrock (UK) and many more.
Following after her NAFA Diploma, she later obtained her BMus Degree (Honours) with First Class in 2013 from NAFA in collaboration with the prestigious Royal College of Music London under the tutelage and guidance of Professor Boris Kraljevic. During her studies at Royal College of Music in London, she studied under John Blakely, who is an accomplished chamber musician and pianist.
She was also invited back in NAFA to perform for the BMus High Scorers Concert in Aug 2013 and was the official piano accompanist from 2013-2014. Since then, she is an official teaching staff in Methodist School of Music (http://www.msmusic.edu.sg/about-us/our-staff-and-teachers) and is active in both teaching and accompanying.
She completed her Masters in Music (Distinction) from University of Otago with distinction.
