Bio
I have been playing piano for 14 years and teaching for 6.
I have been fortunate enough to have played in Jazz combos, Big Bands, a Chamber Music Trio, with vocalists and many solo piano gigs in different styles. I am also a previous two time winner of the Bill Hoffmeister trophy for most outstanding pianist at the National Youth Jazz Festival Competition.
My teaching experience has come from working for a number of music schools in Tauranga and Wellington, as well as giving private lessons. These opportunities have given me a real passion for helping students learn the skills they need to craft their own musical identity.
Teaching Info
Lessons are developed around each student’s ability and musical ambition. My approach combines workbooks with music chosen by the student which I find or arrange to provide versions that are appropriate to their level. This will provide the essential technique and theory that is required of young musicians whilst engaging with their tastes and preferences. My lesson material will cover a variety of styles and I will encourage students to listen to new music often!
As students progress, or if they are starting at a higher level, I will guide them to develop their desired Improvisational, Band/Solo Performance, Aural, Writing and Arranging skills. I have experience in preparing students to sit exams if this is also a goal!
The students musical ambitions will always be at the root of each lesson. My role is to help them learn the skills they need, to play the music they love!
